Suiso Economy: Hydrogen Supply Chains Between Japan and Australia, will advance the discussion on commercializing hydrogen. The seminar will explore the current status of hydrogen technology development and policies domestically and compare this progress with the rest of the world. Through engaging sessions, experts will highlight the cooperation necessary to expand overall hydrogen use, particularly in Southeast Asia, and partnership opportunities for Australia and Japan.

This seminar brings together brilliant minds across academia, business, and government to discuss how Japan and Australia can create a highly feasible hydrogen supply chain, focusing on key areas of development including hydrogen strategy, technology, production, transportation, policies for cost reduction, international supply chains and partnerships.

JAPAN-AUSTRALIA HYDROGEN SUCCESS

In a world first, Australia and Japan have successfully created, liquefied and transported liquid hydrogen from Victoria, Australia to Kobe, Japan on 28 January 2022 as a part of the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC). The HESC pilot project is testing the commercial viability of producing carbon neutral hydrogen that can be exported to international markets. The project has the potential to revolutionise the energy sector and efforts to reduce the threat of climate change through decarbonisation by providing a safe, environmentally conscious and economically viable solution to hydrogen production through gas production and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Global demand for hydrogen is set to grow. Hydrogen has the potential to fulfill up to 20% of global energy needs, generating a market size of US$2.5 trillion by 2050. As the world looks to renewable energy to lower their carbon emissions and meet net-zero carbon targets, it presents as an irresistible long-term solution to mitigate climate change threats.

Australia is among a select few countries with the capability to produce hydrogen at scale. Through strong collaboration in the pursuit of joint objectives, Australia and Japan are now the first partners in the world to have activated large-scale liquified hydrogen transportation. While the most difficult aspect of hydrogen diffusion remains - the overall cost across the entire supply chain needs to be drastically reduced by boosting both manufacturing capability and consumption - early adopters such as Australia and Japan have played a critical role in getting started.
